TOEFL and IELTS certificates are another way of saying "Hey, I speak enough English to live, work or study anywhere I want". They are not too expensive to get and are valid for 2 years. IELTS leans toward British English, while TOEFL sticks with US English. I chose the latter.
I don't actually need it for any official business at the moment though - I just want to pass the test for myself. But who knows, maybe it'll come in handy later at some point.
