Move to live abroad

If you don't like where you are, change it. You're not a tree.

Jim Rohn

You should be very responsible when thinking about removal to another country. Such a decision is a big stress for many people and the matter is that it’s difficult to understand what to start from. This template will allow you to sort the information and to start acting.

  1. Take the final decision

Ask yourself several questions and try to answer them as much as possible honestly and deliberately.

Do I want to move just because now I am in trouble? Is my wish fleeting? Is the decision about removal made by me in a rush of feelings? Do I think that the removal will solve all my personal problems? Will I miss badly my friends and relatives?

If you answered negatively all these questions, you may pass to step 2!

  2. Choose the country for living

All countries have different legislation but you can move to almost all of them if you find relatives, marry a citizen of that country, get a job or buy property or business. If you don’t have relatives abroad, and you are not going to marry a foreign citizen, you should look for a job. Make sure that specialists of your qualification are of demand in the country. Visit the sites on job search in the country you are going to move to.

Define the parameters necessary for you:

    • What climate you want to live in? For this, see top 10 countries with best climate.
    • What live rhythm do you need? Noisy megalopolises or slow life in small towns or maybe even isolated places far from civilization. You always have many options for self-realization in megalopolises, and on a sandy beach, on the contrary, you can start more peaceful and romantic life you’ve always dreamed about.
    • Will religious and cultural customs embarrass you in the country you have chosen?
    • Is the mentality of locals suitable for you?

You may also study abroad. Many free options exist for this, like Erasmus Mundus scholarships for higher education in Europe. The uniqueness is that the study is not limited with one university, you may study in 2-3 universities of different EU countries, get a valid diploma, and the amount of scholarship covers all the expenses.

If you have some money savings, you may buy real estate abroad. In many countries flats are rather cheaper than in Russia. You may buy property applying to services of multiple agencies that provide help when selling or buying foreign habitation. Choose an agency with serious proved reputation and learn carefully all the signed documents.

If you can’t choose from several countries, immigrants’ reviews will be of great use for you:

Experienced travelers and bloggers estimate countries very fairly, note small details, show all the advantages and disadvantages. Photos will also help you to make the choice on your future place for living.

  3. Travel to the chosen country

Having chosen the country it’s better to go there to learn it closely and finally understand if it really fits you. Today the most convenient way to fly for 2 weeks or less is to buy a tour from a travel agency. If you buy a ticket and book a hotel for such a short period of time, most likely the ticket will cost more than the whole agency tour.

Use the free template “Exitingtravel without travel agencies” where you will know how to save as much as possible on such a travel.

  4. Lear the language

If you have chosen the country, you should start learning its language. This is a factor important for you to adapt to the new place. If you have chosen a country with the language not very familiar to you, it’s necessary to start learning it independently or on courses (language schools). If your level of knowing the language is very low, in six months of independent and persistent learning you will be able to read, translate and speak on a minimal level necessary for the removal.

  5. Search for job

Start looking for job still being home. There are many web resources for that.

    Work all over the world:

    Work in Europe:

    Work in Great Britain:

    Work in Australia:

    Work in Canada:

    Work in Thailand:

But don’t forget that not all the professions are available for immigrants. For example, in Thailand there are professions forbidden to foreigners.

There is another option of working abroad. You may try yourself as a volunteer. Volunteer programs have many advantages: language practice, communication experience with different people and an opportunity to learn closer the country of your dream.

  6. Search for lodging

For starters, it will be convenient to rent lodging and then after closer learning of the city and its districts, you may buy your own flat or house.

Here are some sites offering real estate rent:

Hotels and inns (more expensive option):

  7. Prepare the necessary documents

    Documents necessary to move abroad:

    • photos of all family members including babies,
    • birth certificate of all family members,
    • passports (internal and passport for traveling abroad),
    • documents about education,
    • certificates from bank about personal means available, certificates from police about clean record etc.

You may ask for a full list from your embassy. All the documents are to be presented with certified translation.

You will need a residence permit in your new home. (Residence permit is a document certifying the identity of foreign citizen or stateless person and verifying the receipt by him of a permit for inhabitancy in the host country.) Possibility of passing from temporal residence permit to permanent residence permit) usually appears in 5 years (most countries of the EU). Nevertheless, in some countries (Belgium, Hungary) passing from temporal to permanent residence permit is possible after three years of legal residence. Every country has its own terms for receiving residence permit but here are the links that may help you:

  8. Tickets and due

Now when we have considered everything once more, chosen the country, improved the language, found job and lodging, prepared documents, we may realize our dream bravely and buy the ticket!

Take with you money for 2-3 months of living in the new country. This will reduce your risks and you will have additional time to settle the formalities.
