Ok, so I decided to make a new post as an answer to the thematic week topic so that we won't tangle in messages in case we do start dicussions.
Hi there! Let's start our first thematic week. It is March 8, a special day for all these feminist topics. So let's open some conversation... I invite you to answer the following questions:
- Do you like this holiday? why?
- What does feminism mean for you? Do you consider modern feminism to be a good tendency or an overreaction?
- Do you think we (men and women) are really psychologically different by nature or it's a question of education?
Hi everyone!
I like this holiday, for me it's a celebration of spring. I don't think about rights this day and treat this holiday as a chance to rejoice. It's like a bright sunny day with a blue sky and maybe a bunch of tulips in a middle of daily life.
The origin of this holiday is a risky ground today. I really like what evo_lutio writes, a blogger from livejournal, and her ideas. She says that the difference in economic positions between men and women now is a result of women's psychological immaturity and a habit to rely on men. Men have little chance to marry and be provided for as opposed to women who have this alternative and they won't even be shamed for this. No one limits women's rights except for themselves.
It all sounds banal I know) but I don't want to get too deep.
⠀
P.S. These thoughts are about people "in general".
Please, don't take my retelling on trust. That's just my interpretation and not the original thing.
P.P.S. I couldn't find a word for "по/радоваться" in English except for "rejoice" but I think they are different. Maybe someone has a suggestion?
P.P.P.S. I started learning Japanese :D
As for me *I say it in a hushed voice; it's my personal opinion, hehe*... I wouldn´t say I like gender holidays at all. I mean, these holidays, as I understand it, initially created for struggling for women's rights and to honor the soldiers (February 23), now have totally changed their paradigm. Now they reinforce what you have mentioned: the fixed role of men and women in society.
All these phrases and traditions associated with March 8 in Russia, obligatory flowers (not because somebody is really grateful or in love), "women are precious accessories of men's life" (pure objectivation), "let´s take care of our women" (like pets), "I wish you love and beauty" (and not career success, strength, and personal development), it´s all about immaturity and inequality, I think. I would prefer to have another holiday on these dates, like the Bulgarian Baba Marta, and it's OK for me that here in Spain they don't celebrate March 8 at all.
PS: These thoughts are also about my vision in general; it doesn´t mean that I think that everybody supposes all these celebrating this holiday. But sometimes it happens. When my old friend said once this day that I am a beautiful accessory of men´s life, I was about to kick him. ;) ;)
PPS: Maybe it is also possible to say "to enjoy." "Rejoice" is a very good (and exact) word, but it sounds a bit too literary for me ;).
PPPS: Sounds great. You are a crack!
"When my old friend said once this day that I am a beautiful accessory of men´s life"
Wow... That IS too much. I wouldn't say "thank you" for this either.
Yes, enjoy is a good variant. Though somehow I am starting to think that there is no equivalent in English for "радоваться".
PPPS. Thank you!^^
